
![]() Funnel clouds appeared out of a thunderstorm early in the afternoon of June 18th, 1997 over Cheyenne, Wyoming. The following series of photos is provided by Liberty CAD of Cheyenne. Taken from northeast section of Cheyenne.
Initial reports of funnel clouds began around 2:00pm, with the report of a funnel cloud over F.E. Warren Air Force base. Many other reports were also received from the general public. The funnel clouds were visible from much of Cheyenne. Accompanying the storm was heavy rain which caused some minor street flooding and hail up to 1" in diameter. The following is an excerpt from the Southeast Wyoming Severe Weather Network Active NET Storm log. At 2:00pm the NWS issued a Tornado Warning for Cheyenne because of 2 funnels reported and verified over the Southwest portion of Cheyenne. Reported by Eric Sellner at Warren AFB. Reports: 2:20pm - KC7RKZ reports rain 1"/hr at Pershing and College. 2:23pm - AA7TB - Reports rain 1"/hr 4 mile road and College. 2:25pm - KR7B reports flooding at 12th and Fremont, ¾" hail 2:25pm - KJ7DD & KA7DVE verified funnel cloud northeast of NWS offices, AA7TB verified no touchdown. 2:30pm - WA7MAL flooding at Henderson and Omaha road. 2:30pm - N0MKW flooding at College and Pershing. 2:30pm - KA7DVE flooding at 19th and Warren. 2:38pm - KB7MUP reports rain 1"/hr at Logan and Nationway. 2:38pm - N0MKW reports ½" dia hail ½" deep at College and Pershing. 2:39pm - KA7DVE reports flooding at 25th and Warren, ¾" hail and rain at 1"/hr. 2:40pm - WB7RRZ reports 1" dia hail at NWS offices. 2:46pm - KJ7JJ reports rain 1"/hr at College and Lincolnway. 2:49pm - KK7CN reports ¾" dia hail, rain at 1"/hr at College and Welchester. 2:50pm - KA7DVE reports 19th street closed at Morrie Ave. 2:50pm - N7QIY reports water 1 - 1 ½ feet deep at 19th and Logan, sewer backing up. 2:50pm - WA7MAL reported ¾" dia hail and 1" rain at a rate of 1"/hr at Bain school between 2:39pm and 2:49pm. 3:07pm - KK7CN reports water 4 - 5 inches over the road at Welchester and Woods Rd. 3:08pm - WA7MAL reports 1.1" rain at Bain School. 3:10pm - K7VG asked to head to Carpenter on State Highway 216 to verify funnel cloud and heavy hail. 3:37pm - K7YM could not verify funnel clouds reported by general public near 4 mile road and Dell Range. 3:50pm - K7VG reports heavier hail, but not large hail at state line, headed back to Carpenter.
4:00pm - WA7MAL reports rain total of 1.42" at Bain School.
